Audition Tips
Attending an audition can be stressful even for the best
of actors. Phizzical Productions is committed to nurturing
talent and we want your audition to be as comfortable as
possible. To help you prepare for your audition, we have
compiled a list of tips that may help you win a part in our
next production Big B - The Musical.
1. Prepare your audition piece well in advance and
practice it. Perform the piece to trusted friends and family
for their honest opinion and ask for tips on how to improve
it. If you have a camcorder, film yourself and watch the
piece.
2. Always wear comfortable clothing suitable to the nature
of your audition. Sometimes it helps to go a little extra to
make the director visualise you in the role.
3. Ladies please try to make sure your hair is away from the
face. Men can try to experiment with the growing of simple
moustaches, sideburns, etc. if suitable for the characters.
4. Relax and then just do it. Give your best at the
audition. Remember, it’s like an interview. If you sell
yourself through your talent, then you are almost there.
5. Don’t talk about what you can bring to the role, show it.
And don’t try to get chummy.
6. If you are dancing, pay particular attention to facial
expressions, movement, miming and enjoying the dance. Make
use of the space provided to audition.
7. Some of the reasons why you might not be short-listed
include:
a). You did not display the
emotional, intellectual, physical or the vocal range
needed for the character
b). You did not meet the
director’s pre-conceived image of the characters height,
weight or age
c). Your interpretation of the
role did not capture the director’s perception of the
character’s attitude, mood or temperament
d). Your personality did not
appear to be compatible with the other performers being
considered
8. Only audition if you have the drive, the commitment
and the hunger to be on stage. It is
hard work!
9. There may be other factors for not succeeding and we will
give you feedback on it to help you improve for future
auditions.
