The stage is set for an extraordinary celebration of Gujarati cinema as Phizzical  proudly presents “Challo Gujarat,” a captivating season of Gujarati language films taking place throughout February and March at Phoenix Cinema in Leicester. Made possible by the generous support of Film Hub Midlands, BFI’s Film Exhibition Fund, this cinematic extravaganza promises to delight audiences with a diverse array of stories, characters, and emotions straight from the heart of Gujarat.

From heartwarming dramas to rib-tickling comedies, the “Challo Gujarat” season showcases the rich tapestry of Gujarati cinema, offering a rare glimpse into the culture, traditions, and vibrant spirit of the Gujarati community. As cinephiles and culture enthusiasts converge at Phoenix Cinema, they embark on a journey through the sights and sounds of Gujarat, experiencing the magic of storytelling in its purest form.

The season features an impressive lineup of films that capture the essence of Gujarati life and culture. Alongside the National Award winning opening film Hellaro, audiences can look forward to captivating cinematic experiences such as:

  • Ventilator: A heartfelt drama starring Jackie Shroff that follows the Mandalia family as they come together at the hospital when their patriarch is put on a ventilator. As they await his recovery, they are forced to confront their issues.
  • Dhunki: Directed by Umang Vyas, this film chronicles the journey of two friends who quit their jobs in an IT firm to start a food delivery business. Their path is fraught with ups and downs as they strive to recover the massive start-up cost.
  • Chello Show: When the magic of movies captivates nine-year-old Samay’s heart, he embarks on a journey to pursue his cinematic dreams. However, he is unaware of the heartbreaking challenges that await him. India’s submission for Best Foreign Film to the Academy Awards.
  • Gandhi & Co.: Directed by Manish Saini, this heartwarming film follows two mischievous boys who look up to an elder who embodies Gandhi’s teachings. One of the boys decides to imitate Gandhi but still hangs on to his mischievous ways.

In addition to the thought-provoking films, audiences can immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Gujarat with a folk dance workshop run by Soni’s School of Garba. Participants can learn the vibrant rhythms and movements of traditional Gujarati folk dance, adding an extra layer of authenticity and enjoyment to their cinematic experience.

Furthermore, attendees can look forward to a special Q&A session with the director of the Academy Award-submitted film Chello Show, Pan Nalin. Delving into the creative process behind this acclaimed film, Nalin will offer insights, anecdotes, and behind-the-scenes stories, providing audiences with a unique opportunity to interact with a visionary filmmaker.
