Royal Engagement: “10 Nights” Captivates HRH Prince Edward

In a rare and memorable occasion, the Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Prince Edward, recently attended a special performance of the Olivier Award-nominated play “10 Nights” at the Omnibus Theatre in Clapham. Written by Shahid Iqbal Khan, directed by Sâmir Bhamra, and performed by Azan Ahmed, “10 Nights” offers a poignant and humorous exploration of one man’s spiritual journey during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

The play follows Yasser, portrayed brilliantly by Azan Ahmed, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery through itikaf, the Islamic practice of sleeping and fasting in the mosque during the holiest nights of Ramadan. As Yasser navigates the challenges of isolation, shared spaces, and his own inner struggles, audiences are taken on a moving and funny exploration of identity, faith, and humanity.

“10 Nights” is a testament to the power of storytelling to illuminate the human experience with authenticity and compassion. With performances in English complemented by Urdu and Arabic references, as well as captioned surtitles in English and Urdu, the play resonates with diverse audiences, inviting them to connect with its universal themes.

Reflecting on the significance of HRH Prince Edward’s attendance, Sâmir Bhamra, Artistic Director of Phizzical, shares, “It was an incredibly special moment to share ’10 Nights,’ a play that celebrates Muslims and their multitudes with incredible humanity, with a member of the royal family. This encounter underscores the power of theatre to bridge divides and foster understanding.”

Reviews of “10 Nights” highlight its compelling performances, sophisticated script, and insightful exploration of identity and community. With accolades such as “★★★★” from esteemed publications like The Stage and Whats On Stage, “10 Nights” continues to garner praise for its authenticity, warmth, and relevance.
