Anaya Vasudha presents an evening of classical Indian and contemporary dance works supported by Arts Council England, Sampad, Phizzical & Chitraleka Dance Company.

The evening will begin with TRI consisting of Shri Rajarajeshwari Ashtakam, an eight stanzas devotional poem in dedication to the Divine mother, Goddess Parvati. It describes her heavenly beauty, her benevolent nature towards all who worship upon her name and the strength she embodies and bestows to her devotees.  In Ashtapadi, Radha, seated by the riverside tells her friend of her beloved Lord Krishna; As she recalls the stories of the moments they shared; she begs her friend to bring Krishna to her, as every time she thinks of him; she feels the five arrows of Cupid strike her heart. In Confluence, Anaya is accompanied by live musicians and Kathak dancer Shyam Dattani to show the contrast between devotion and love and how they are matched with the playful echoes.

Choreographer Subhash Viman Gorania collaborates with Anaya Bolar to create EKA where the triad of Saraswati, Laxmi and Parvati unite to form the Tridevi. This philosophy contrasts the male energies of the Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva Trimurti. The female energies represent the learning, prosperity and legacy of our individual contribution to society. The power within EKA transforms irreversibly with Emiko Ishii Jane and Kesha Raithatha who perform alongside Anaya. As they interact and influence each other’s behaviours, they reveal the delicate inner and turbulent outer balance that forms our singular world.

Artist Biographies

Anaya Vasudha Bolar Performer (TRI & EKA)

Since performing her Arangetram in Bangalore, 2012 at the age of 15; Anaya, currently, 21 with a degree in Sports Therapy, is fast gaining recognition as one of the new emerging dancers following her success as a category finalist in BBC young Dancer 2015 and 2017. She trained in Bharatanatyam since the age of 6 under her mother, the highly acclaimed Smt. Chitraleka Bolar. She was the youngest to have attended Dance Intense Toronto 2011 at the age of 14 and recently she was granted a training Bursary in 2016 by ISTD allowing her to train with artists such as Parshwanaath Upadhye and Rukmini Vijayakumar.

Abhiram Sahathevan Mridangam (Confluence)

Abhiram learns Mridangam under the tutelage of Sri. M. Balachandar at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He has established himself as one of the most popular and captivating Mridangist among classical dancers and musicians. Abhiram was awarded the title of “Kalalayaratnapooshan” by Late Padmashri Adyar K Lakshman for the best Mridangam player at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan dance music festival, in Chennai.

Emiko Jane Ishii Performer (EKA)

Emiko, a British born Japanese dancer, choreographer, actress and instructor completed her academic studies in Film & American Studies at King’s College University and University of California Santa Barbara. She is the founder and creative director of international dance company Epika Dance Troupe. Emiko is known for her unique fusion of dance and training in different styles, ranging from Hip Hop, Japanese, Bollywood to Kathak. She is currently training in Kathak under Padmashri Guru Pratap Pawar.

Gurdain Singh Rayatt Tabla (Confluence)

Gurdain is one of the leading young tabla players in the UK. With knowledge and training from a young age from his father and grandfather as well as his guruji, the Late Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Gurdain displays a wealth of playing abilities across various tabla styles. He has worked with Contemporary, Kathak and Bharatanatyam dancers and regularly collaborates with prolific percussionists including western drummers and carnatic percussionists.

Kesha Raithatha Performer (EKA)

Kesha is a British Asian female dancer/choreographer primarily trained in Kathak and Contemporary dance. Her earlier training was under Priti Raithatha and Nilima Devi M.B.E. Since 2009, Kesha has been dividing her year between India and the UK training and performing under several prestigious companies. Her recent credibility is being Artistic Director and Choreographer for BBC 1’s upcoming documentary. Kesha is also part of The Cultural Leadership Programme initiated by Curve Theatre and ACE and has recently been awarded her second Grant from ACE for her solo work ‘Traces’, initially commissioned by Akademi

Shyam Dattani Performer (Confluence)

Shyam, a London based Kathak dancer is training under the guidance of Guru Urja Desai Thakore and has undergone training with various other teachers such as Abhay Shankar Mishra. Being a passionate dancer, who is developing into a well-versed and all rounded young artist, Shyam aspires to challenge himself through dance. He recently won the BBC Young Dancer South Asian Category 2017 and went on to perform in the Grand Final at Sadler’s Wells. He also achieved second place in the Kalaashram Kathak Contest, European Leg 2017.

Shyla Kumar Veena (Confluence)

Shyla learns the veena under the tutelage of Smt. Sivatharini Sahathevan, completing her arangetram in 2004. She has also had vocal training under the late Smt. Saraswathy Packiarasa, and presented her samarpanam in 2013. Shyla has continued her musical journey through the involvement of the national youth orchestras of England and has performed across the United Kingdom and abroad. Shyla’s veena style is influenced by maestro, Veena Jayanthi Kumaresh, with whom Shyla has undergone further training. She is currently touring ‘ONE’, a new veena ensemble commissioned by Zeroclassikal.

Subhash Viman Gorania  Choreorapher and Artistic Director (EKA)

Subhash, a British choreographer and performer, came into Indian classical dance (Bharatanatyam & Kathak) through Hip Hop and Urban movements. His ability to move in a smooth and liquid way gives his dance an unorthodox and quirky edge. The rich plethora of dance training he has, brings a wide range of movement vocabulary to his choreographic work. His performance credits include the Bessie award winning choreography ‘Ecstasy’ for ‘Get on the Good Foot’ produced by Apollo Theater, NY and his own work titled, ‘Gamechanger’, includes works by Saju Hari, TJ Lowe, Veena Basavarajiah & Subhash himself.
